#34 How many Optional subjects are there in the UPSC Exam?

The UPSC  is the most coveted exam in India. It is conducted for the recruitment in various officer level jobs in various departments and fields. The IAS,IPS,IFS being the most desirable among all. Every year many students attempt this paper. This paper is conducted in three stages. The UPSC mains (written) examination comprises nine papers. This includes two qualifying papers and seven papers which will be calculated for ranking. This includes two optional papers which carry 259 marks each. Many of you who are preparing for this paper for the first time have doubts about choosing the correct optional. What is an optional? What are the subjects the board has optional ? What is the importance of optional? 

To answer these questions one must know the number of subjects the board provides us with. The UPSC provides us with 48 optional subjects including 23 from literature. It gives you an opportunity to select any depending upon your interest and availability of material.

You may choose any of the given subjects provided but it must be of your interest because choosing the correct optional may get you a good rank in the merit list.
